What are Trustees?

Trustees are volunteers responsible for ensuring the mission and long-term aims of the charity, Dove House Hospice, are met. Trustees: ensure the resources of the charity are used appropriately influence the direction and long term plans of the charity take legal responsibility for the charity.

Becoming a Trustee at Dove House will give you an opportunity to develop the strategic direction and long-term plans of the hospice, use your skills and knowledge and develop in new areas and make a real difference to people living with a life-limiting illness. Board of Trustees

Philip Daniels

I have served as a hospice Trustee for almost twenty years now and am dedicated to the hospice mission to improve quality of life for our patients suffering life limiting illness, I have a keen interest in how that mission is best financed and managed. I am a Hull lad and a retired optometrist. I am also a Trustee of a well-known local religious charity and am proud to be a Freemason. I am an avid collector of bric-a-brac and suchlike so the hospice shops are a great hunting ground! At Dove House our patients and their families and carers experience a world of holistic specialist palliative care and support which is second to none. I consider it a very special privilege to help make it all happen.

Maggie Butt

Vice Chair
I feel very honoured to be a part of the Dove House team who are the most professional and dedicated group of people that I have ever worked with. I was a volunteer for 5 years before becoming a Trustee in 2014 and remain a regular volunteer today. What makes me most proud of being part of this formidable team? We’re positive, passionate and professional and do everything possible to meet the needs and wishes of everyone that we serve.

Jan Antons

I have worked in healthcare for over 30 years initially working in pathology before moving into a career in therapeutic radiography. I have held several roles in the healthcare industry both in the UK and in the US. In recent years I have focused mainly on business, marketing and strategy. After completing my MBA in 2019, I wanted to put my newly honed skills to good use, taking on a new role at work to serve my local community. I want to ensure Dove House is in a position to continue delivering outstanding care both in the hospice and in the community with my particular area of interest in helping to develop and review the long-term plans and strategic direction for Dove House.

I have just joined the Board in 2023 and I’m really enjoying learning about the way the hospice operates, the services it provides and its future. In 2021 we lost my mother-in-law to cancer, she was cared for at Dove House in her final weeks and days and we were amazed at the quality of care she received. Whilst one of the saddest situations, her time at Dove House was also filled with happiness and warmth. I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to give back to the hospice by being a Trustee and look forward to working alongside the Dove House Team.

Sally Booker

I recently retired following a varied career in which I worked as Head of HR in food manufacturing and the maritime industries and then took a step into leading operations across ports the UK. I was looking for something new to do that would allow me to be involved in the community and make use of the skills and life experiences I had acquired. I was delighted and honoured to be offered the opportunity to join Dove House as a Trustee. It's great to be among people who are so passionate about what they do and I look forward to getting involved.

John Dunning

I am a practicing Barrister and have been a member of the Board for some years. As well as serving as a Trustee I am also the Chair of Governors at an East Riding Secondary School and a member of both the Hull and East Riding Education Appeal panels. I am firmly committed to the ethos of Dove House and believe that our greatest strengths are the quality and commitment of our volunteers, complemented by a professional clinical and administrative staff of the highest calibre.

Dr Dan Harman

I'm a fulltime Consultant Community Geriatrician which means I spend time caring for older people both in the community and in our local acute hospital. This is my first Board appointment and one of the most rewarding roles I have taken on; hopefully my lack of previous Board experience is compensated by my passion for improving the care of people living in our area. I value being able to contribute to the direction Dove House is travelling and I’m proud that I’m playing even a small part in what makes it so great.

Jim Harris

I joined the board of trustees in 2022 and feel really positive about being part of such a dynamic and innovative organisation. I grew-up in the Humber region and after working nationally for the bulk of my early career came back to Hull in 2009; always aware of the wonderful work Dove House undertook and its unique place in the health care hierarchy of the area. I have seen first-hand the vital part the organisation plays in our community and the services offered to so many families. My main job involves working day-to-day with retail property in Hull city centre, including the Business Improvement District, which gives me a great insight into changing shop and shopping trends, now, and looking forward. Similarly, I will look to extend awareness and promote the great work Dove House undertakes among my city centre colleagues.

As the Director of a national social research agency, I specialise in data interpretation and its application in the public, government, and charity sectors. Additionally, I serve as a Trustee for an animal rescue charity in the Hull and East Riding area. My professional drive stems from supporting organisations that make meaningful contributions to their communities, particularly those that embrace data-driven approaches and innovation. Volunteering for the Dove House Hospice team, an enduring and iconic organisation in the region, fills me with pride. I am genuinely excited about the charity's future and its unwavering dedication to providing person-centred care to individuals and families. Being a small part of this mission is an absolute privilege.
