14 amazing fundraisers raise £44,000 for the hospice while trekking the Sahara Desert!

The team departed the hospice on Saturday 4th November for a weeks trip – trekking the Sahara Desert and Atlas Mountains. After a 9 hour journey – they trekked into their first camp, arriving at camp in the middle of the sand dunes in the darkness.

With the first days walk being over 12 miles, tackling sand dunes, rocky surfaces and dusty road, passing through desert villages was quite a challenge. Taking a two hour lunch shaded by a large tree to avoid the midday sun and heat was welcomed by all.

Some of the team decided to sleep under the stars on the second night of camping, only to be awoken at 2am with the rest of camp as a severe desert storm hit ! Making it through the night and tents only just standing, there was another 12 mile walk to get out of the storm. Seeking an alternative accommodation this evening in a small village. After a short walk the next morning, the group headed to the Atlas Mountains to complete another four hour uphill trek, taking in the mountains and villages. Luckily the temperature was a lot colder which made it a little easier for everyone.

The team then returned for a final evening to enjoy the sites of Marrakech. Challenge complete.

Well done everyone! What an incredible acheivement!
