This is the day in the life of Adele, Assistant Manager at the Dove House shop in Hornsea

Hello, my name is Adele and I am the Assistant Manager at the Dove House shop in Hornsea. I joined the team in September 2013.
What made you join the Dove House team?
I moved to Hornsea in 2012 and always enjoyed visiting and shopping in the hospice charity shop. Once my son went to school I saw that they were advertising for the Assistant Manager position and I applied. The minute I found out about the fantastic job the hospice does and the special team supporting it the more I was thrilled to be part of that team!

What was the first thing that struck you about Dove House when you came for the first time? Is that the same now or has it changed over the years?
Hospices by association are often labelled as ‘a place to die’. After visiting, I realised this was so far from the truth. It’s a place full of positivity despite the circumstances. The staff are amazing and there is a real sense of calm. The care supplied is second to none. I’ve had so many wonderful stories told to me by customers expressing their gratitude for their loved ones' dignified end and the care they received.
The care and attention never waivers and the hospice team are always pushing forward looking to improve where possible because they care for their patients and the families that come to them.

What do you feel makes Dove House special?
The people! The nurses and everyone who contributes to the hospice! I love the role the shops play in the bigger picture of the hospice and that everyone is working together for the common good.

What do you look forward to each day?
Everyday is different and the challenges that come with that!

What are the amazing moments that stand out for you in your day that make a difference?
The hard work and dedication of our amazing volunteers is something to be humble about!
Everyone works together to do their bit and play their part. I very much enjoy the camaraderie between volunteers and customers. Also seeing the shop constantly change as it’s filled with different donations.
There is never a dull moment working at the shop, there is always something new and exciting to do.

What does a typical day look like for you?
One of the most important parts of my job is listening. To volunteers and customers who sometimes just need to be shown care and compassion. Often, we might be the only person they see or speak to in a day. It’s a busy shop but it’s important to take the time to appreciate everyone who comes through the door. Shoppers/dontaters, browsers, and volunteers alike. This is what makes each day special!

What are the big achievements you have accomplished while working at Dove House?
Every year when we smash our targets! Being creative I’ve had the opportunity to do many window displays that have won competitions but more importantly, raised the bar for the high street!

What are your hopes for your future at Dove House?
That we can continue. In a climate that’s tough, it gets harder each year but I’m hoping to be here to do my bit for a long time to come.
