The Education Department at Dove House Hospice provides short day/evening courses, study days, lectures and workshops for health and social care professionals, assisting them in providing appropriate palliative care within the community.

Study Day

Compassion in End of Life Care - "Compassion is fundamental to the care we give at the end of life." (Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care, 2015). But what does this mean: what is compassion?

This Study Day will explore compassion, and palliative care patients' understanding and experience of it. We will focus on the need for compassion to be present throughout a person's end of life treatment and care.

Bereavement Session

Lost for Words - This loss awareness study day covers a range of topics including strategies to help children, children's understanding of loss, theories of loss, children and funerals, recognising signs of loss, changes in learning and behaviour after loss and policies in schools.

Study Day

Staying Healthy in the Workplace - This session will explore ways in which we must look after ourselves when we work in emotionally charged environments. Topics to be explored include Mindfulness, Resilience in the Workplace and the use of Complementary Therapies. So often we are afraid to challenge friends or colleagues for fear of hurting or upsetting them. This is not helpful, especially when we aim for the highest possible standards of clinical practice. The day's topics will include assertiveness, where we will look at tools to enable us to challenge practice and others and to express our feelings without fear of redress or causing pain or upset.

Study Day

Revalidation - Revalidation doesn't need to be onerous and stressful. This session will allay any fears and concerns you may have about revalidation in order to enable you to complete the process with ease and confidence. The day will provide the theory behind the process as well as offer an opportunity to gain practical experience in completing the required documentation.

Caring for Someone at the End of Life - This day aims to give delegates an overview of caring for a dying person, covering recognising dying, pain and symptom control, emotional and psychological care, addressing spiritual issues, supporting family and friends and accessing appropriate support.

End of Life Care for People with Dementia - This day will look at person-centred care and dementia, and caring for a person with dementia at the end of their life. Part of the the day will involve some interactive work using patient case studies.

MND - Withdrawal of Assisted Ventilation - This lecture will explore the ethical and legal issues surrounding the withdrawal of assisted ventilation at the request of a patient with Motor Neurone Disease.

Workshop

Simple Foot Massage Techniques - This half-day workshop is designed to enable care home staff and care assistants gain confidence in providing a simple and safe foot massage technique to their clients and/or patients. This session will include discussion of the principles and benefits of simple massage, awareness of precautions and contraindications to massage, safe practice and sourcing the necessary resources. Participants should expect to gain instruction of and perform a simple foot massage routine during the workshop.

Target audience: Care home staff and care assistants.
