Louise's volunteer story
I’ve been volunteering at Dove House since June 2010, based at the Hornsea shop. I first came in as a customer with my carer Jody and immediately thought it looked like a lovely place to work. I soon joined the volunteer team and was warmly welcomed from day one, and that sense of belonging is still going strong 15 years later.
Every Monday, I arrive ready to make a difference and genuinely happy to be there. We work hard, but we always manage to have fun too. A typical shift for me involves steaming donated clothes and preparing them for the shop floor. I’ve even earned the nickname ‘The Demon Steamer’ because I can get a full rail steamed, dated, and ready to go in no time!

One of the best things about volunteering at Dove House is knowing I’m helping such a great cause. On top of that, I’ve made so many wonderful friends, definitely an added bonus.
Volunteering at the hospice is incredibly rewarding, and I always feel valued for the work I do. Over the years, I’ve become an expert in my role, and each shift brings something enjoyable. I especially love meeting people, both members of the public and fellow volunteers.
Realising I’ve been volunteering for 15 years was an amazing moment. I can’t quite believe it’s been that long! If I had to sum up my experience in three words, they would be: rewarding, social, and fun. Being part of such a happy, supportive team is what’s kept me coming back, and what will keep me going for many more years.
Volunteering has helped me build confidence, make new friends, and learn new skills. I’d highly recommend it to anyone, especially with Dove House.
