Avril's Volunteer story

“My name is Avril, and I have volunteered for Dove House for the last 20 years. Over the years I have worked at Dyer Lane, Swaby’s yard (menswear) and I currently volunteer two days at our newest Shop on Toll Gavel in Beverley.

I can honestly say that the last twenty years have flown by, and I have enjoyed every minute. I am proud to be contributing to the amazing work and care done by the hospice, but working in the retail sector of Dove House has given me something for me to do!

All of those years ago I made a decision that has turned out to be one of the best I have ever made. I knew of the wonderful work the hospice does by adding life to days, even when days cannot be added to life and the important support and care they give to families of patients! This was why I chose to offer my services to the Wednesday Market shop in Beverley, and I was welcomed with open arms!
I have made so many friends with fellow volunteers, shop managers and the wonderful customers. The fun and laughter I have shared with them all has been invaluable!”

Shop Manager Andrew: “Avril is a real larger than life character with excellent customer service skills (not surprising after 20 years of service really!) She is devoted to the cause and has continued to do her two days a week, despite serious illness day in day out!  I honestly don’t know how we would manage without her help! She is a valued member of the team and liked by all (staff, volunteers, and customers alike). She always positive and loves a laugh. Thank you, Avril, for all that you do for Dove House.”
