After officially opening the hospice on the 24th June 1992, Diana surprised staff and patients by returning to the hospice a month later to volunteer for the day. Motor Neurone Disease Community Support Nurse, Elaine Longley recalls the day vividly:

“We only found out that Diana was visiting on the morning. Everyone was so excited and it was amazing how she just got involved and wanted to be treated like a volunteer.” She added that the princess made the effort to speak to all the patients : “It was a special day for patients, staff and volunteers. Diana was so compassionate and caring and spent a lot of time talking to patients making them feel special."
