Introducing our new Chair of the Board of Trustees, Phillip Daniels
Posted on: May 27th, 2020
‘It is a great honour for me to be elected as Chair of the Board of Trustees. My thanks go to Vice Chair Jim Doyle for diligently acting as interim Chair and to my Board and EMT colleagues for the confidence they have shown in me. My feelings are however bitter sweet in the wake of our sadness on the untimely passing of our former much-loved Chair Janet Weatherill. Janet’s kindness and good works will be an enduring example and inspiration to us all. I am a Hull lad, born on Sutton Road and a recently retired optometrist serving as a Trustee for almost twenty years.
I am dedicated to the hospice mission to improve quality of life for our patients suffering life limiting illness and have a keen interest in how that mission is best financed and managed. Running my own business has over years restricted my availability however I have enjoyed serving terms as Vice Chairman and Treasurer. Some years ago I briefly worked as a volunteer on the Wilberforce Unit, in Catering and at many fundraising events. My experiences as a volunteer were a joy and I am looking forward to assisting again now that I am retired. I have represented and spoken on behalf of the hospice on many occasions.
For me the challenge, fascination and pleasure of being a Trustee is about working within such a multifaceted organization. Our great joy at Dove House is our fantastic tribe of people in whatever area they work. Never a day passes without learning something new, renewing old acquaintances or making a new friend. Our patients’ families and carers experience a world of holistic specialist palliative care and support for their loved one’s which is second to none. There are no words to describe the love and kindness they receive from our wonderful staff and volunteers. I consider it a very special privilege to help even in a small way make it all happen.
I am married to Jo my ever supportive wife of over forty years. We are blessed with two adult children and a first grandchild of only nine months. I am also a Trustee of a well known local religious charity and am proud to be a Freemason. I am an avid collector of bric-a-brac and suchlike; am an old aircraft and motor car fanatic; and take great pleasure travelling the Highlands and Islands of Scotland where visiting distilleries is my great passion! As a collector of everything Dove House Hospice Shops are a great hunting ground!
As an organization we face great clinical and financial challenges as a result of the pandemic that currently engulfs us. Our first-class staff and volunteers both clinical and non-clinical are straining every sinew at this most difficult time to re-establish our full operational capacity so we can look forward to exciting new developments in our care at Dove House and in the wider community. We are all so very grateful at Dove House for the enormous financial support we receive from all our friends across Hull and East Yorkshire without which we cannot survive particularly in the current circumstances. I look forward to serving and the challenges ahead’.
