Stephen's volunteer story

Hello, my name is Stephen, and I am a Volunteer Gardner at Dove House.

When did you first start volunteering for Dove House?
I have been volunteering at the hospice since just before 2010.

Which part of Dove House do you volunteer at?
I volunteer as a gardener at the hospice on Chamberlain Road in Hull.

What made you want to volunteer at Dove House?
The hospice was advertising for volunteers and due to a change in shift patterns I had time to help out and I thought ‘Why not’.

Tell us what your typical volunteer shift looks like.
On arrival, I check the greenhouses, pots, and the garden itself. This helps me work out what needs to be done and I just go from there really.

What would you say is the best bit about volunteering?
It keeps my interest in gardening going especially when I know others are benefitting from my handy work.

Is volunteering at a hospice rewarding?
It is a job well done which hopefully patients, staff, and visitors appreciate.

What would you say are some of the rewards of volunteering?
By far it is the feeling of helping others even in a small way. I also really love the social aspect which has really helped me.

Has volunteering helped you?
Since retiring it helps keep an active interest and helps to keep a positive outlook on life.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about volunteering at Dove House?
Go for it! There is no pressure to just come and see if it suits you. You really have nothing to lose, and it might just be one of the best things you do.
