Shop Manager Designs for 'A Mischief of Rats' Trail

As some of you may already know or have seen, our local area has been invaded by rats – but not to panic, these aren’t the kind you will want to run away from. Instead, they are bright, unique, colourful, dotted all around Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire and almost 6ft tall!

The ‘A Mischief of Rats’ trail consists of 45 sculptures, designed by a multitude of artists within our community. At Dove House, we are lucky to have an amazing artist within our own retail team – Susan Woolhouse, Spring Bank West Shop Manager.

Initial inspiration for this new sculpture trail comes from Hull band, The Rats. During the 60s and early 70s, the band dominated the local music scene. Unfortunately, Lead Guitarist Mick and bassist Trevor both died of cancer. Therefore, the ‘A Mischief of Rats’ trail aims to raise funds for charities to help those in the early diagnosis of cancers, heart disease and dementia.

Susan’s design was inspired by the works of Mick Ronson, who went on to form with his fellow bandmates and David Bowie, The Spiders from Mars. However, as life-long Ronson fan, Susan wanted to reflect on more than just his time in the band with Bowie and make the people of Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire more aware of his talents in other areas of music. The design has small but impactful homages to Ronson, including a collection of musical notes from his most well-known guitar solo in the song ‘Moonage Daydream’, inspiring the overall name for Susan’s design.

If you are interested in visiting the sculptures, or more specifically Susan’s, we have attached the viewing times for the rat in Ings Library on our social media channels. We wish everyone ‘Good Luck’ on finding the 45 rats and congratulations Susan on your incredible work!
