Children's Bereavement Group supports schools

The Children’s Bereavement Group that runs at Dove House has been helping so many young people who have lost loved ones but the support hasn’t stopped there. Jill who runs the group has been visiting local schools and
one school has kindly shared their experience:

“The five students we referred to Dove House for Bereavement Support in February 2023 have all commented on how good the course was and they have felt like it has really helped. A parent has also been in touch with me to say what a lovely group it was and that they have seen a difference in their daughter.

One of the students was reluctant to go for the last session due to her missing one of her favourite lessons. After speaking with her she decided to attend and when I saw her later that day, she had said how pleased she was that she attended the last session.

The Withernsea Primary school contacted me yesterday as one of my year 7 students from last year attended the Children’s Bereavement sessions. They have asked if his younger brother who is in year 6 and will be attending Withernsea High School in September can have his name put down for support as it is coming up to a year since their mother passed away. Jill Dolman from the Children’s Bereavement team was amazing and has agreed to take the Year 6 student in the next cohort of students. I have arranged for the primary school staff to bring him to the high school for the session when they start after April.

As a school we feel this would be a great opportunity to help the Year 6 students who need support and will be transitioning to us in the near future. We would like to speak to the Primary and see if any other students would need some support over the next few months as the service has been invaluable to our students and we are very lucky that it can be made available to our students who have lost someone close to them.
We cannot thank Dove House enough for the support that they give to our school.”
Zoie Wiseman, Head of Year 7 at Withernsea High School

“I have referred several students to the Children’s Bereavement service during the time it has been running and all students who have attended the course have taken a lot from it. Jill and the team at the hospice have helped our students immensely. They have formed friendships and learned they are not alone in their grief. All the students who have attended have abided by the confidential element and haven’t shared any stories with the wider school community this shows the level of trust and respect they have for Jill and each other during the group sessions.

I hope we continue to have support from Dove House long into the future.

I recently attended a course at Dove House and all of the staff were wonderful and are passionate about supporting people during their grief. Dove House have an amazing way of offering reassurance in an honest and caring way.” Sara Mills, Head of Year 9 at Withernsea High School
