Inpatient care on the Bedded Unit
The inpatient unit offers 24 hour care and has 20 beds. The unit provides specialist palliative care which means that it aims to improve an individual's quality of life when their illness is no longer able to be cured. Admission usually occurs when there are specific reasons why the individual, his/her carer and family and involved professionals feel that 24 hour care is required in order for the individual to be helped with issues arising from their illness that cannot be managed at home. The emphasis is on improving quality of life and promoting independence wherever possible with treatment, support, and rehabilitation. The hospice does not offer long term care
Reasons for referral may include :
- Pain and symptom control - some patients have pain and other symptoms eg sickness, and a short stay at the hospice gives the clinical team the chance to find the right treatments to resolve these problems. Through skilled care from the multi-disciplinary team, we hope we will be able to help you feel much better so that you can return home feeling comfortable and much more able to cope with your illness.
- Terminal care - here we aim to provide care for patients who are in the last stages of their illness. We aim to achieve for them the best quality of life ensuring comfort and dignity to the end.
- Respite care - although our resources for providing respite care are currently fairly limited, we do endeavour to provide carers with a break from caring for their loved one and periods of respite care can be booked with us.
Patients and their families are cared for by a multi-disciplinary team made up of a range of professionals including :
- The medical team led by Dr. Ben Zylicz, Consultant in Palliative Medicine
- Nursing team
- Physiotherapists
- Complementary therapists
- Occupational therapist
- Family Support Team
- Spiritual care coordinator
- Pharmacist
The aim of this team is to ensure that the care you receive is holistic and person centred. This means that we want to make sure that we treat the whole person rather than just the illness and everything we do will be centred around you and your family.
As with all our services at Dove House, the care given on the bedded Unit is supported by dedicated volunteers who are supervised to take an active role in the 'hands-on' care of patients.
