Introducing Dulcie the Dove
Over the last two years staff and customers at local Yorkshire bank branches have been fundraising on behalf of Dove House. Already they have raised a fantastic £8638 for the hospice, which cares for adults in Hull and the East Riding who have life limiting illnesses, and now their fundraising is spreading...wings that is!
That’s because one Hull Family have been so inspired by the fundraising the bank has done so far that they decided to help the hospice generate even more funds by buying them a brand new Dulcie the Dove mascot. The Johnson family donated the money in memory of Roy Johnson who sadly died in December.
Roy’s niece, Louise Kirlew, who work at Yorkshire Bank has been instrumental in the bank’s fundraising and so instead of having flowers at Roy’s funeral, his family decided to put the donations towards Dulcie which will help the hospice with their fundraising in schools.
Sarah Cusick, fundraising manager, said:
“Dulcie the Dove has been the hospice’s mascot for as long as I remember. She has served the hospice well, running many a fun run and visiting schools across the region to help explain the work of the hospice.
“Old Dulcie is now able to retire and hand the reigns over to Dulcie Junior who can’t wait to get out in the community and help raise the hospice much needed funds! We are delighted the Johnson family have made this kind gesture which has enabled us to raise even more money without cost to the hospice.”
Louise Kirlew, Roy’s niece, said:
“My uncle was always a very active man and an admirer of the work of the hospice so it seemed very fitting to raise money in his memory to buy the hospice a new mascot. Through my work at the bank I have learnt how important the hospice is to our local community and also how important it is to explain that work to young people in our schools. I know new Dulcie will help the hospice achieve this goal and raise essential money for this great cause.”
At Dove House Hospice we offer our services free of charge to our patients and their families and as a result we need to raise £5 million each year to continue our services. We only receive funding from the government for 91 days of the year; the rest must be raised from the generosity of the local community.
