Reception Volunteers Sue and Linda
Sue and Linda volunteered to work on the reception desk of our hospice, which provides specialist palliative care for people in Hull and the East Riding with life-limiting illnesses, following the deaths of their husbands.
Sue’s husband John went to Dove House to ease his pain. “Everything was done to make his last two weeks as comfortable as possible,” says Sue. “It was a relief to find such a wonderful caring environment, not just for John but for the whole family. After John died, I decided to give something back for the wonderful care he received. I remember how nice it was to see a friendly face on reception when I was on the other side, 11 years ago.”
“When my husband Peter was ill, no-one seemed to be able to do anything to help his pain relief,” says Linda. “I found myself on the steps of Dove House one Saturday morning, just desperate for help. Within two hours, they had sorted my husband out and he was sitting in his chair, eating his breakfast. After his death nine years ago, I wanted desperately to give something back so that’s why I decided to volunteer.
“Being on the frontline in reception, you are able to put your arm around someone’s shoulder and understand what they are going through because you have been there yourself. I’d recommend volunteering to anyone – you get as much back as you put in and that’s a great feeling. ”
