Reception Volunteer Sam
“I applied to become a volunteer at Dove House Hospice just before Christmas 2008 and started covering reception on an evening just after Christmas once I had completed my training.
“I wanted to do something which is totally different to my day time role as a train driver, and had some experience many years ago on a reception.
“My day time job means that I have to do shift work, so I have lots of time on my hands during some days although anything I take up on a voluntary basis needs to be able to fit in with the flexibility of my working life. I already volunteer two nights a month with another local project but wanted to volunteer at another organisation. Dove House Hospice came to my mind straight away as my Nan was admitted for two weeks about 7 years ago. I will always remember the excellent service she received from the people at Dove House and have always been grateful for that. I wanted to give something back for the way they looked after my Nan, and I also wanted something local to Hull. The company I work for has also been involved with Dove House over the years.
“By volunteering at Dove House I can give something back and help make a positive contribution and gain experience at the same time, although I have no intention of giving up train driving, who would?!
“Everyone is very friendly, and welcoming at the hospice and it’s a lovely place.”
