Fundraising Volunteer Ryan

“Originally I decided to volunteer because my local shop was advertising for volunteers and I had free time around college. So I thought I would give it a go and see how it went. After my first day at the shop I was ready to go back for more, it was a great experience! Everyone was so friendly and helpful and we all got on really well.

“Going to the shop wasn't like going to work, although we all worked hard, it was enjoyable and we all helped each other out, including the shop manager. I decided to start helping in the fundraising department when I got a job as they were flexible and I could still help at some of the events around my shifts.

“The fundraising team where fantastic and I loved the first few things I did. It gave me the chance to try something new and that feeling of making a difference and helping others was really apparent. All of the fundraising staff are wonderful and I really get on with all the other volunteers too!

“I like to be involved with things, and help others, and meet new people. Being part of fundraising allows me to do this, There's always somebody new on the big events like the summer fayre and its great to meet them and talk to them to find out why they support the hospice.

“I also like to be at as many events as I can, I find going to these events really rewarding as the public are always happy to say hello and are really friendly. Also now and again you get people who will come and talk to you and tell you their story, then say thank you for doing a great job. Personally I know it’s not me that needs to be thanked, it’s those that work in the hospice itself but it’s still nice to receive that praise from a complete stranger and to be able to pass it on!

“I think others should become hospice volunteers because been part of the Dove House family is fantastic. You get to meet some lovely and wonderful people, make some great friends, have lots of fun and most importantly of all, make a massive difference to everyone who uses the services that Dove House provides.

“Being a volunteer for Dove House isn't like work. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. It's a pleasure to go and be part of something that makes a big difference to a lot of people.”
