Finance Volunteer Maureen

“I was working as an office manager for the local health scheme when I first started to help the hospice by taking small trinkets to sell and raise money. The staff were always very friendly and I soon built up a relationship with Sylvia who would call me from time to time to see if I could help out.

“When the time came for me to retire I called Sylvia to let her know and she asked if I’d consider becoming a volunteer. She told me how the hospice was always looking for people to help, especially those who had professional experience and I though why not – I’d always said to myself I never want to wake up in a morning and think I’ve got nothing to do and I knew this would be a great way of giving something back to my local community.

“I didn’t start immediately, I had a long awaited holiday to take first, but a few months later I had my first shift on reception. I’d told Sylvia that I’d be glad to help but that I didn’t want to help on the medical side with patients. She reassured me this was fine and that the great thing about volunteering was that I could help wherever I liked and at flexible hours to suit me.

“I immediately felt at home working at the hospice and not long after I started my regular Friday morning shift on reception I was asked if I would consider giving the finance department a hand and as I had always worked with figures and I said yes. That was eight years ago now and I haven’t looked back since. I now do a morning in finance and a morning on reception as well flower arranging and the odd fundraising event too. I know the hours I donate really help the hospice and it definitely keeps my brain active too!

“The hospice always needs volunteers in all different areas and I’d really encourage others to give them a call and find out where they can help. Before I volunteered I thought the only help they would need would be in their shops or assisting patients but help is needed across the organisation. I’m so glad I made the decision to volunteer and hope more people will do the same.”
