Retail and Fundraising Volunteer Ann
“I worked in an admin role in Beverley for 12 years, a job which I loved, but unfortunately my husband Terry became ill with agoraphobia and I had to give up work to care for him. For many years I was his carer and when he died suddenly and unexpectedly I was at such a low point and very isolated.
“Having been out of work for such a long time, I found my skills were out of date and wanted to do something that would help me back into the workplace and also something that would mean I would meet new people and do some good. Volunteering was the logical answer and Terry had always said he’d like to work at the hospice, a cause we’d both supported for a long time, so I gave them a call.
“By this point I had very little self confidence and I was nervous about even filling out the application but I did it and quickly heard back that there was a position within the fundraising department.
“On my first day I was so nervous but was instantly made to feel so welcome. I was petrified they’d make me work on the computer or use the phone but instead they sat down and asked what I’d like to do and not like to do and set me on with sorting out collection boxes. I was then, and continue to be, told what a difference I am making which feels fantastic – even cleaning the collection boxes; I know my work helps the hospice raise over £30,000 a year!
“Quite quickly I made new friends with the staff and other volunteers within the fundraising department and my confidence soared. When I started at the hospice I would dress in dark, baggy clothes, I was timid and self conscious, now I’ve got a whole new bright wardrobe and I’m living and enjoying life again – nothing can stop me!
“After some time I was encouraged to give working on a computer a go and found I liked it but wanted to know more. Volunteering gave me the confidence to start computer night classes and now you can’t get me off the thing. I help at all the hospice events from midnight walks to car boot sales and when I think back to the time when I wouldn’t even answer the phone, I can’t believe I’m the same person!
“When the fundraising team had an opening for a temporary position as an admin co-ordinator I was encouraged to apply and had my first interview in 20 years. I was so nervous but beat off the competition and took on the role which gave me a greater insight into how the hospice raises funds and showed me from a different perspective, the importance of volunteers.
“Now the contract has ended I’m looking for other part time admin roles so I can continue to help at the hospice. The hospice is my family and I really want a job that will allow me to continue to help. I’ve also started helping in my local shop which I love and I get to meet so many people its fantastic!
“The work I’ve done at the hospice is proudly listed on the top of my CV. I’ve gained so much experience from volunteering and in the few interviews I’ve had, everyone has been impressed by just how much I’ve done. I can’t recommend volunteering highly enough. Volunteering at Dove House Hospice has completely changed by life.”
