Complementary Therapy
We use Complementary Therapies here at Dove House Hospice to ease our patient's symptoms and provide an increased sense of well being.They aim to benefit the person on an emotional, spiritual and physical level and are provided alongside other treatments and across all of the clinical departments of the hospice.
What therapies are offered and what do they do?
- Reflexology - gentle specific pressure technique which is applied to the hands and feet and creates a feeling of physical and emotional relaxation and eases pain and tension.

- Aromatherapy - uses the beneficial properties of individually blended aromatic plant essences in the form of oils, creams and gels. Used directly onto the skin to help with skin problems and pain or inhaled to ease anxiety, nausea and insomnia.
- Massage - used to improve circulation, ease tension and pain and promote relaxation.
- Reiki (Ray-key) - involves placing the hands on or above specific energy points around the clothed body. Based on the non-religious principle of channelling "Universal Life Force Energy" through the therapist and enabling the recipient to gain a sense of warmth, comfort and relaxation.
- Other - other therapies include Indian head massage, relaxation and guided imagery, manual lymph drainage and acupuncture.
What are the benefits of Complementary Therapies?
The benefits of Complementary Therapy include creating a sense of relaxation and calm, enhanced feelings of well-being, reduced feelings of anxiety and tension, improved symptoms (such as pain, constipation and breathlessness) improved sleep patterns and improved body image.
